Fourteen Hills has reopened for visual art submissions for Issue 31. These submissions do not need to be themed and more information can be found on the Visual Arts Submittable page. Our Special Feature is still open to submissions, too; more info can be found below.
Fourteen Hills is now open to visual art, fiction, and nonfiction submissions for Issue 31's Special Feature: Local Legends and Hometown Horror.
Tell us your experiences with local legends/myths or create your own hometown horrors! It can be from Bigfoot to Indigenous myths to any eldritch horror, as long as its lore is tethered to the history of a town.
As we are particularly interested in submissions from writers of color and writers from marginalized and underrepresented communities, submissions to our Special Feature will be free to BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized and underrepresented writers and artists for the remainder of the submission period.
See below for general and genre-specific guidelines:
- Submissions only accepted via Submittable
- Cover letter section should include brief introduction, contact information, selected publication history, and any other relevant information. Cover letter should not be written as third person biography
- Art: 4 pages
- Fiction & Nonfiction: One long-form piece up to 25 pages OR up to 3 flash pieces at 1,000 words or less each. File preferred in .doc or .docx format (Microsoft Word or Open Office)
- Submissions which do not follow these guidelines will not be read.
As we are now an annual journal, please expect a wait time of 4-8 months.
If your submission is accepted for publication in the journal, you will receive two free copies of the issue your work appears in and a year's subscription.
We are now charging a small service fee ($2) for submissions to our Special Feature*. This administrative fee helps fund our online submission system.
(*Submission fees are waived for current subscribers to Fourteen Hills. To support us as a subscriber, please visit our Subscriptions page. If this fee poses a financial hardship, please email us at hills@sfsu.edu.)
We are adamantly opposed to AI-generated submissions and reserve the right to reject any piece created with AI-assistance on sight.
Thank you for supporting Fourteen Hills with your subscription!
Beginning June 16th, 2021, our subscription fee will be increased to $16. Subscriptions begin with the next published issue and subscription prices include shipping and handling. All current subscribers are entitled to free online submissions to Fourteen Hills.
(To order a single back issue, please indicate the number of the issue you would like in the box below).
Thank you for supporting Fourteen Hills as a current subscriber.
If you are not a current subscriber and would like to subscribe before submitting, please visit our Subscriptions page. If you are not interested in subscribing, please submit using the regular Visual Art page.
Visual art submissions may be up to 10 pieces of visual art. A series is welcome, but not required.
- Please label each image with your last name. If your name is not attached to the exported ZIP files, it is immensely difficult to keep track of and manage your valuable submissions. We want to see your work and give it the attention it deserves.
- Cover letter section should include contact information, a third-person author biography (3–5 sentences in length), and an image list including titles, art medium, size, and the year it was made. This context helps us decide a lot of things in terms of layout and design when publishing your work.
- Images should be set, at minimum, 300 ppi and generally will not appear larger than 6" by 9".
- If you have questions about the status of your submission or subscription, please contact us at hills@sfsu.edu.
